Dance Your Way to Better Thoughts

We've all had days where we seem to get lost in our own negative story. Thinking about the worst possible outcome for each scenario. No matter how hard you try, you seem to be locked in a draining thought spiral. When you feel trapped in your mind, it's time to practice thought stopping.

There are many ways that we can choose to pattern interrupt our negative thoughts. One way is to just say the word "STOP" out loud. I do this frequently and even though it felt strange at first, it's a great way to redirect from a destructive rabbit hole.

Another method is called a safety thought. I first heard of this concept in Kyle Gray's book Angel Prayers. To choose a safety thought, think of something that makes you feel calm and happy. It could be a special person, place, or object. I chose a field of sunflowers and lavender as my safety thought. To use your safety thought when you are in a bad mental space, bring to mind your scene. Then start to add dimension to the image in your mind's eye. I picture coloring in the flowers one by one, adding in the sunshine, sky, and clouds. By the time I've "painted" the entire scene in my mind, I'm serene and content.

Creativity is an incredible way to take our minds off limiting beliefs and patterns. Whether your favorite activity is art, dance, writing, etc., you can use it to reprogram your perception. I love to dance. I dance around the kitchen with the dog, rock out while driving, and sing in the shower. What happens when we allow ourselves to be overcome with the experience is that we release the resistance to allowing good things into our lives. I find it impossible to be upset when I am bopping around to a happy song.

Dancing is also a fast way to manifest your desires. Next time you're working really hard to make your dreams come true, take a minute to do a little victory dance around the house. Say things like "Yes!" and "Thank you, God (Spirit, Goddess, Universe)!" When we feel the feelings of joy and celebration now before something has manifested into our physical reality we are sending a strong signal that we are grateful and we trust that it is coming to us in perfect timing.

Here's a list of a few songs that are my go to music suggestions:

  1. Don't Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin

  2. I Feel Good (I Got You) by James Brown

  3. Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves

  4. I'm So Excited by The Pointer Sisters

  5. Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys

  6. On Top of the World by Imagine Dragons

  7. Happy by Pharrell Williams

  8. Don't Stop Me Now by Queen

  9. Three Little Birds by Bob Marley & The Wailers

  10. Beautiful Life by Ace of Base

So next time you're feeling down, dust off your dancing shoes, paint a picture, or just listen to a song that makes your heart soar. You've got this!
